Although it has been announced that the GPhone is not going to be a phone, but a operating system, Google has not said that it is not going to create a phone. Maybe we will see Google step into the hardware sector after all.
To this point Google has built about 5 prototype phones to demonstrate its new operating system. The phone is code-named the Dream and is very similar to the popular Apple iPhone in shape and size being thin and about 3'x5'. Something different from the iPhone is the "Dream's" touch screen is not only touch sensitive, but time sensitive. This means that the longer you hold your finger on a point, the area you are controlling on the phone expands, potentially offering further user ability with additional advanced control options.
The "Dream" makes use of all the functions you would expect like email, YouTube, text documents, but runs all of from the Virtual Machine platform at its base. By doing this the "Dream" has the capability to launch any and all applications during a session and when they are not in use they will be run in the background.
HTC is considering making a commercial version of the "Dream" to be ready as soon as second-quarter 2008. The people at HTC have been working with the open handset alliance for nearly two years and seem very excited about the project.
