If you want to try out the G1 right now, T-Mo has a solution. They have put up a customised emulator which features a brown G1 for you to play with. Theres also a 360 degree view mode. Click here (http://tmobile.modeaondemand.com/htc/g1/) to play around with your new phone.

I cant wait to play with the actual phone. That will be the moment of reconing. I'm very interested to feel the device in my hands. Some of these other touchscreen phones have a feeling of being rediculously cheap. This is something that the Iphone doesnt have a problem with. Also, the responsive nature of the touch screen itself will be a big determining factor as well. If the screen isnt responsive enough to allow a porting of the gpSPhone emulator, I want no part in this. But it very well could be. I may eat my own words. Infact, I hope I am able to! I would love to see the technology of this phone surpass what is already out.
Edit: After playing with this "emulator" for a few seconds, It has occured to me that there is no headphone jack...Perhaps this is a flaw of the so-called model, but this device better have a standard headphone jack.

I'm afraid you have seen it correctly. There is not a standard 3.5mm headphone jack on the G-1. You have to use a USB dongle to plug in headphones.

yep, G1 uses HTC's own ExtUSB jack. Thats one of the drawbacks.

I got my hands on this the other day, phone feels pretty solid. I had my iphone in one hand, and this in the other, iphone felt a little heavier (obviously not a scientific finding)!
The touch screen was pretty much like an iphone as well. None of that weird feeling when you are on another touch screen and realize it doesn't operate like the iphone. The transition was flawless! I still don't get the trackball thingy. I was very please!!

I got to play with one this morning. I can't wait till mine comes in. The only thing I really didn't like was the bottom part of the phone where the trackball is kinda gets in the way while typing.
