If you just acquired your G1, you must be wondering how the contacts syncing with your Gmail account works. The Official Google Mobile Blog, in a series on Android-specific articles has one on how to go about syncing your contacts on Gmail with G1.

If you don't use Gmail as your primary mail, you probably will feel forced into using Gmail while using G1. The good news for you guys is theres no road block to stop Yahoo or Microsoft from creating their own replacement app. But if Gmail is what you use, syncing can't get smoother than this. Everything is taken care of behind the scenes with a two-way syncing process. This also means, in future if you change to some other Android handset, all your contacts, calendar will descend from the cloud.

I agree...also I had to do a master reset per a Tmobile (employee) issue which sent my sms to the 1st name in my contacts, once a certain internal message was received and opened. The Gmail/google server kept everything there and I didnt have to worry about losing anything...I thought that was pretty awesome.

I was using Hotmail with my Windows Mobile phone. I synch'd the same way as this... so all I did was export my hotmail contacts to a CSV file, and imported them into GMAIL so I wouldnt lose all my contact info such as addresses, birthdays, etc....

Pretty simple to make the transition, I think.

And if I have another kind of phone (i.e. a Nokia N70) can I export the contact from this device to G1 directly? I have tried to import in gmail but it don't work...

I'm not sure.. the result of the "send as a business card" option of the Nokia phones. The extension is .vcf

outlook can read both vcf and csv. save your contacts to your pc, import to outlook and export as a csv file. then import into gmail and you will have them all automatically sync'd to your G1.

seems like a pain, but its a sure fire way to save them.

nokia has a desktop software you can install to backup data to the computer... it's called PC Suite you should be able to export contacts through it. It should be free on nokia.com

USA Ver (http://www.nokiausa.com/A4986252)
European Ver (http://europe.nokia.com/A4144905)

There's an app I wrote that can skip the Outlook part (especially, if you don't have Outlook) and convert the Nokia csv to the format Google expects:
