G1 sends text messages silently to T-Mobile
Hi all,
I look forward to receive my G1 next week. But yesterday, an article made me really nervous. According to APC Mag
http://apcmag.com/bill_explosion_goo...hones_home.htm
The G1 sends text messages permanently to T-Mobile, which would really suck because I do not live in the U.S. and it would cost me a lot.
1. Is anyone familiar with the problem?
2. How can I solve it? Special RC Firmware?
3. How can I check which RC I have?
Thanks in advance to all g1 Experts!

Still waiting for my android phone to arrive , so I haven't tested my statement but read it all over the internet :-)
Use the adp1 or uk rc8 firmware on your device. It's a "problem" with the myfaves applicatoin only wich is bundled in the US firmware only. I guess you have to get root on your phone to change the firmware. Don't know if there is a modified US firmware without the myfaves application.

Menu > Settings > About Phone
Putting another "region"-firmware on the phone is a process you have to do. You are getting only firmware of the same region over the air.
Don't know if there is a big downside about change the firmware. Afaik there are only some differences in installed applications.. but maybe later someone with real knowledge wake up and answer more clearly. Right now i can only post what i read somewhere else.

go to xda (when you can get onto it and not the 500 internal error i keep getting) and there is a thread there dedicated to changing all this and getting root with step by step instructions- now i haven't done it myself yet but seems relatively easy......
if you want the US (it is there on xda), surely you could delete the myfavs app if you have access to root? not sure on that one......

I just fixed this about an hr ago....
Check the firmware you are using first.... if you are on RC7 or RC8, you are in the clear. If you are using RC29 or 30.... u need to flash it to an RC8....
The instructions are available both in this forum and at XDA...
can someone please put the instructions on Youtube?

Hi Experts,
finally I got my G Phone. Sadly, it had RC30 so I followed the instructions on XDA-Link. Everything worked, I have RC29 now. What also worked:
What To Do Now That You Have Root
Now that you have root, you will want to apply "Hard SPL" to your phone. HardSPL is what will allow you to apply flash images from other regions (like UK on US phones, and vice versa), create full backups of your phone, install the latest build from the Android source, and usually resurrect your phone if it is "bricked". You have already downloaded the file to your SD card, so now you can apply it.
Power off your phone.
Start up in recovery mode by holding home and pressing power.
You will now enter recovery mode. You should see an exclamation.
If you do not see a menu on screen, press Alt-L to show the menu.
Press Alt-S to apply the update from the SD card.
After the update is complete, hold Home and press Back to restart.
So this also worked (Thank God!). Now i wanted to install the modifed RC 30 or RC8. I followed the instructions, pressed Alt-W, the icon in the display changed, I pressed Alt-S, and it seemed that it worked, because after restart, I had to do all the Gooogle Sign In, setting your phone procedure. I checked my RC Version in settings, but it still has R29 I tried the same with modified RC8, and it was the same problem.
Anyone knows what I did wrong? Or could I use the RC29 now, hoping it wont send silent messages to T-Mobile USA?
Please Heeelp

Now , on my display, I have a Triangle with an exclamation mark in it, and the
G1 in front of it, and nothing happens. In the description it says, "this may take a while". How long is it? Im waiting now for 10 minutes. Is it 20? an hour?
Or did I already do something wrong? (hopefully not)

Ok do go in more detail, I followed all the instructions and now I have the same "used testkeys" display like here
http://modmygphone.com/wiki/index.ph...181&oldid=3641
, including the (cant open /cache/recovery/command)
So now i copied the update.zip on my sdcard, restart the phone, pressing alt-L and then alt-s
Then it says
Installing from sdcard
finding update package
opening update package
E: cant open /sdcard/update.zip
What did I do wrong? perhaps some wrong commands during the steps before on telnet?
Please Help it seems I am sooo close to uodate it.
BTW, can I directly use the latest 1.4 update? do I hace to use an old one?

try opening the update.zip on computer and see if you get any errors.
you can directly use 1.41 instead of 1.31.

Found out the problem. I use MS Vista, and when I renamed the file to "update.zip" but actually it changed into "update.zip.zip" because it didnt changed the extension.
So now it works fine, I am the proud owner of RC8 1.41, so LIVING SWORD and all other Experts. I appreciate your help, Thanks a lot!!!!
