Using my g1 on o2 with no data plan

Im currently using my g1 with an o2 sim in it, and as i dont have a data plan with the sim the phone is constantly accessing the web and using my credit, changed apn settings to stop this, but just wondered if there was a way to stop it connecting other than the way i use, any help with this would be great.

Settings -> Data Synchronization -> Turn Auto-sync off
