Default "when I delete from inbox"

I've looked high and low for the answer to the question I am about to ask. How come in the popmail setup there is an option for deleting mail, "when I delete from inbox," but it does not work? I can't get rid of any mail off of my devise. When I delete from the in inbox or sent mail folders, the mail all piles up in the trash, which I cannot remove. I will have to erase the account in order to eliminate these files. There must be a way that the Android folks can separate the account info from the residule mail files that need deleting. Anyone have a solution?

Thanks,
jrg
