MontaVista has demonstrated Android stack running on top of MontaVista Linux on TI's OMAP3 processor(pictured above). The demo is being held this week at Embedded Technology 2008 in Yokohama, Japan. Joerg Bertholdt, VP of marketing at MontaVista said, "
We are bringing MontaVista Linux's advanced features and hardware support, along with our professional Linux support, to developers of Android devices to help device manufacturers embrace the Android platform and bring innovative handsets to market quickly."
MontaVista claims that over 50 million handsets have shipped with its distribution including the latest
Motorola VE66. It provides the base Linux on which other platforms like MotoMAGX can run. Other phones based on MontaVista Linux are the RAZR2 and ROKR serie
s.
The implications of this are quite interesting. First, MontaVista's professional support for Android will attract most of their customers to Android. Second, Motorola recently said it was dumping the Symbian and MotoMAGX platform to concentrate on Android and Windows Mobile. Motorola is already working on their Android version, with support from MontaVista they can accelerate the time-to-market. All this means more no. of quality phones running Android.
