New to G1, few questions.

Hey. I'm thinking about getting the Dev Phone 1. I'm currently a senior in High School, studying AP Computer Programming. I feel that I should be able to grasp the G1's code, and it will help expand my knowledge. My questions are...

1. Is there always a failsafe option? i.e., is there always a way I could flash the original OS back to the phone?

2. To get the Dev Phone 1, I have to first pay the $25 dollars, then purchase it for $399 from the market, correct?

3. Are there any educational discounts for the Dev Phone 1?
